Thomas and Friends was originally based on 'The Railway Series', which was a collection of books written by Reverend Wilbert V. Awdry. They center on a group of trains who live on a fictional island 'Sodor'. Rev. Awdry created the books to entertain his son while he was recovering from measles, and some are based on his personal experiences.
Thomas the Tank Engine has been running for 10 seasons, is broadcast in more than 20 languages around the world and is still in production. Seasons 1-4 are almost wholely based on 'The Railyway Series', while 5-10 are original and have introduced new characters and more action-packed story lines. The show has been narrated by Ringo Starr, Michael Angelis, George Carlin, Alec Baldwin and Michael Brandon.
